Japanese martial arts are a definition of tradition and history, and our club follows this ethos. The name Yanagi-no-ki (shortened to Yanagi for simplicity) means Willow Tree. The colours and imagery of the club logo are derived from the clubs head instructor’s past and heritage. The willow tree represents humble beginnings in Judo (with a literal meaning of “the way of the willow”), and yellow background, the base colour of his parent club Eastways Jiu-Jitsu badge under the tutelage of Hanshi Olu Bamgbose (9th Dan).
With 40 years martials arts training, 30 of those in Jiu-Jitsu, at Yanagi we strive to provide the best possible for each class, of which each has a main focus.
Adult (ages 15 onwards) classes are geared towards excellent technical ability with emphasis on effective use of Jiu-Jitsu for everyday life.
Children (ages 7-14) have the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, where they can build key skills, confidence and focus whilst having most importantly, fun. Older students are also taught personal safety awareness, and are helped to improve their physical capabilities and self-confidences.
Self Defence Class (ages 14 onwards) is aimed at providing awareness, practical skills, in a safe environment to gain real hands-on experience. Punching, kicking, escapes, plus a whole range of other techniques are taught to provide as wide a base as possible to give you the confidence that is key to self-defence.
